Indigos Play & Ecology Centre
Welcome to our new Indigos Play & Ecology Centre. Inspired and challenged by young people’s growing passion and concern for the environment over the last few years we wanted to make a commitment to protect the planet and address the climate crisis by developing Indigos as an ecology centre as wells as a natural space to play in.
Our aim is to inspire positive change through directly connecting people and the natural environment by modelling sustainable approaches in our space whilst offering informal, playful environmental learning opportunities at the same time. We aim to sustain the ecology of the space, protect the natural habitats and the green infrastructure and model sustainable approaches that can have a positive impact on our planet whilst maintaining children’s play at the heart of our provision.
Since we have obtained the site we've worked hard to develop and maintain the magical grounds developing pathways, play areas and opportunities, growing spaces, woodland, pond habitats for amphibians and more with the aim of enhancing biodiversity. As we develop the ecology centre moving forward, (using the eight ecological principles), we aim to demonstrate and model sustainable approaches through all aspects of our provision giving children, young people and families opportunities to engage and learn more about the environment.
Ecological Principles that underpin our values and ethos:
Climate Change: Raise awareness of the impact we have on the Climate through our lifestyles and how our actions can influence the situation in a positive way.
Energy: Increase awareness of energy issues and improve energy efficiency.
Food: Encourage the whole community to take responsible food-related choices and actions that protect the environment, promote human rights, and improve the wellbeing of society every day.
Biodiversity & Nature: Raise awareness of the flora and fauna present in environment and explores ways to increase the levels of biodiversity.
Health & Wellbeing: Promote the health and wellbeing of young people and the wider community and to make environmental connections to health and safety.
Transport: Raise awareness of transport issues and come up with practical solutions that will make a behavioural changes possible
Waste: Raise awareness on the impact of waste on the environment and explores actions to minimise the amount of waste that we produce and dispose of on a daily basis.
Water: Raise awareness of the importance of water both locally and globally and raises awareness of how simple actions can substantially cut down water use.
